Course Description

This first level French course will engage students with a unique integration of communicative building blocks and contemporary culture, providing the tools they need to build a solid foundation in introductory French.

Course Outline

  1. Greeting people
  2. Spelling
  3. Giving numerical information
  4. Introducing yourself
  5. Identifying people, places, and things
  6. Academic subjects
  7. Expressing dates
  8. Learning to pronounce the alphabet and selected vowel sounds in French
  9. Talking about nationalities
  10. Expressing actions
  11. Expressing disagreement
  12. Learning to distinguish between and pronounce selected sounds in French
  13. Talking about personalities, clothing, and colors
  14. Expressing possession and sensations
  15. Mentioning specific places or people
  16. Getting information
Each section will also include pronunciation/accent practice, vocabulary, verb construction and other grammatical structure to help the student build conversational skills.  Exercises will be assigned, as found in the text, to help students practice and correct themselves as they progress.  French culture will also be introduced where appropriate.

Learner Outcomes

Students will learn the basic structures of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary to be able to communicate comfortably in French and interact socially, both formally and informally, with others.

Evaluation:  participation in discussion and group activities and completion of assignments, attendance
