Course Description

This course provides students with thorough academic preparation for becoming a knowledgeable and competent home inspector. Topics include licensing law, building science fundamentals, principles of house construction and applicable building code history, and an in-depth and on-going review of the "Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics". A thorough study of house systems that must be inspected -- structure, roof, exterior, interior, heating and cooling, electrical, plumbing, insulation, ventilation, and appliances, will be covered. Time will also be spent on developing inspection report writing skills. This course is approved by the North Carolina Home Inspection Licensure Board, and meets their standard for the classroom training required in preparation to sit for the licensing exam. It is also approved by the South Carolina Residential Builder's Commission as preparation for their exam.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this class, students will have the knowledge to perform home inspections.

  • Students will have the knowledge necessary for an understanding of how a house operates as a system, and be able to apply this knowledge to the home inspection process.
  • Students will gain an understanding of the "Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics", and be able to apply them to the inspection process.
  • Students will gain an understanding of inspection report writing, ensuring that they are able to produce a clear, understandable report that meets and exceeds all state standards.

Notes

Evaluations will consist of exams, competencies, field inspections, and report writing. Student are expected to maintain at least 70% attendance.
