Course Description

This course is designed for students with little or no exposure to the Spanish language, or those who have not studied Spanish in many years.  Students will be introduced to fundamental travel vocabulary and phrases, as well as cultural traits that will allow them to communicate when traveling and living in Mexico.

Week 1

  • Pronunciation and Spanish alphabet, p. 10 - 13
  • Emails using alphabet (including pronunciation of @ and .)
  • Number and gender of nouns, p. 15 - 16
  • Definite and indefinite articles, p. 15
  • Subject pronouns 
  • Ser – to be (Describing people, places, and things), p. 16 - 17
  • Skill practice 

Week 2

  • Review week 1
  • Forms and placement of adjectives and colors, p. 14
  • Question words and how to ask and answer questions, p. 30 - 31
  • Using ser for possession, p. 22-23
  • Using ser & possessive adjectives to introduce people

  • Numbers 1-100 (We will teach how to use número por número to save time), p. 32 - 33

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
•    Demonstrate knowledge of travel vocabulary such as at the airport or train station, at a restaurant, shopping, directions, emergencies, and accidents.
•    Demonstrate knowledge of key travel verbs in the present tense (including asking and answering questions and using familiar commands).
•    Demonstrate correct pronunciation, even of unfamiliar words in Spanish.
•    Express needs and wants while traveling, such as greetings and small talk, introducing people, asking directions, using transportation, ordering food at a restaurant, shopping, asking for assistance in emergencies, and describing symptoms at a pharmacy or with a doctor, understanding weather.
•    Express an understanding of some cultural characteristics of México.
•    Be able to communicate with coworkers and socialize with new friends
 

Notes

COURSE REQUIREMENTS – Students are expected to:
•    Attend a minimum of 24 of 36 class hours (4 out of 6 weeks)  Due to the participatory nature of this class, regular attendance is expected
•    Participate in class
•    Complete all assignments and homework
