Course Description

This course is designed to introduce recording workflows to students in the school of music. We will focus on the  basics of recording in Protools, micing and basic mixing. This course will provide the necessary knowledge to record each student's instrument so that they  can take part in the lucrative session and remote recording industry.

Course Outline

Week 1- Basics of Session Playing and File Transfer

Week 2- Introduction to Protools, interfaces, signal flow

Week 3- Basics of recording, setting up pre roll, post roll, loop record

Week 4- Basic concepts of micing instruments class 1

Week 5- Basic concepts of micing instruments class 2

Week 6- Setting up in non ideal acoustic spaces

Week 7- How to record various takes

Week 8- Comping and basic editing in Protools

Week 9- Using basic plugins to deliver the best sound

Week 10- The basics of mixing stems

Week 11-The basics of mixing stems and your instrument

Week 12- Time code and syncing performances for sending remotely

Week 13- Using Zoom, audio movers and other programs to communicate remotely

Week 14-Sample song for recording

Week 15 - Listening to students efforts to record and add to the sample song

Week 16- Adjusting to feedback, and notes and rerecording.

Learner Outcomes

Each student will learn the best techniques to record their instruments, while also learning the basics of recording in Protools. This course will provide the information necessary to begin offering session or remote recording as a service successfully.
