Course Description

This course is the fifth course in the Beginning Spanish series. The focus of this course will be to enhance the student’s reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in order to allow them to communicate in any setting with increased fluency. Emphasis will be on the complicated verb tenses such as past tense (using both Preterite and Imperfect tenses), Past Progressive tense, Future tense, Conditional tense, and the Present Perfect tense.

I. The Imperfect past tense
II. Uses of the Imperfect tense
III. Comparison of Preterite and Imperfect past tenses used together
IV. Changes in meaning of some verbs in Preterite and Imperfect tenses
V. Use of direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns together
VI. Use of reflexive pronouns and direct object pronouns
VII. Use of Se with indirect object pronouns and unplanned events
VIII. Reading comprehension: El juicio, Marianela
Week 7 - 9
Complete Spanish Lesson 19
I. The Imperfect Progressive tense
II. The Preterite Progressive tense
III. Reading comprehension: El hospital
Week 9 - 10
Spanish Verb Tenses Lesson 15
IV. The Future tense of regular verbs

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of syntax of language, including: the use of both Preterite and Imperfect past tenses; Past Progressive tense; Future tense; Conditional tense; and the Present Perfect tense.
  • Express basic thoughts and demonstrate basic conversational skills in the areas above.
  • Demonstrate correct pronunciation, even of unfamiliar works in Spanish.
  • Express an understanding of some cultural characteristics of Spanish-speaking countries
