Course Description

The JumpSTART: Careers in Hotel and Lodging program provides comprehensive training to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively address and enhance a guests' unique needs. Developed and endorsed by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), the START (Skills, Tasks, and Results Training) program provides students with current knowledge and skills needed for a long-term career in the lodging industry. 

This 13-week program will immerse students in a variety of opportunities to be cross-trained and proficient to work in different roles such as front desk, reservationist, room services, restaurant server and more. Students can also earn up to 6 industry relevant certifications that may increase their options for managerial positions. 
Students will learn industry and management skills through in-class lectures, hands-on training, industry tours, field trips, and discussions with industry experts.  To help prepare students for this new career, the program also includes resume preparation, interviewing skills, a professional headshot, and other career building options. 

Hospitality careers are in demand worldwide with an expected job growth of 12% over the next 5 years, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA)! Work at vacation destination resorts, hotels, cruise ships, or tourism organizations.  
 

Course Outline

The JumpSTART: Careers in Hotel and Lodging program offers general foundational knowledge, supervisory and management training, and power skills needed in the hospitality industry.  Training includes:

Certified Guest Services Professional (CGSP)certification - Customer service skills to effectively address and positively enhance a guests' unique needs.

Certified Front Desk Representative (CFDR)certification - Identifying equipment and systems used by front desk staff, key control, pre-arrival, check-in, and departure, sales, and upselling techniques used by the front desk.

Certified Guestroom Attendant (CGA) certification - Define common room status codes, correct usage of chemicals and cleaning supplies, and safety and security issues.

Certified Restaurant Server (CRS) certification - Cultivate a hospitable, welcoming environment. greet and seat guests and anticipate guest needs, Serving beverages and meals and check back to the table, kitchen safety and sanitation guidelines.

ServSafe Manager certification - Certified through the National Restaurant Association this certification verifies a manager’s ability to protect the public from foodborne illnesses.

ServSafe Alcohol certification - Certified through the National Restaurant Association this certification teaches the fundamentals of responsible alcohol service and helps to reduce the risks involved in serving alcohol. 

Responsible Alcohol Sellers Program (RASP)- Offered through the NC ABC Commission ensures students know the right way to sell and serve alcoholic beverages and the laws and regulations.  

Hotel & Lodging Supervision and Management - Comprehensive overview of the role of a supervisor or manager in the hotel and lodging industry. 

Hospitality Technology - Property management software that connects event sales, guest rooms, management, and point-of-sale (POS) systems.

Career Readiness - Nontechnical power skills that is integral to success in the workplace, including teamwork, critical thinking, professionalism, conflict resolution, and communication. Students will also receive training on job searches, résumé writing, networking, and interview skills training to help job seekers identify and obtain employment.

                        

Learner Outcomes

•    Students will learn to manage and evaluate functional systems in lodging operations.
•    Students will learn to examine, evaluate, and remedy possible negative situations in the lodging industry. 
•    Students will practice professional ethics, customer service, and the ability to work effectively as a team member.
•    Students will demonstrate a cross training of front desk operations, guest room services, breakfast attendant, and restaurant server.
 

Notes

If a student has a ServSafe Managers Certification and it is current, not expired, the ServSafe Managers exam voucher fee may be deducted from the cost of tuition.

All instructional materials are included in the tuition cost. Some Workforce Development Scholarship assistance may potentially be available.
