Course Description
With the growing popularity of the Maker's Movement, the field of sewing is experiencing a surge of interest. Whether you desire to learn to make or repair your own clothes, create custom home décor items, or enter the field of custom alterations, our sewing classes will equip you with the needed skills.Course Outline
Week 1
- Learning how to use a sewing machine
- The sewing machine manual
- Learning to sew basic stitches
- Notion basics
Week 2
- Additional instruction in learning to use the sewing machine, accessories, stitches
- Basics of fabric, thread, needles, and all items related to successful sewing
- Sewing on fabric
Week 3
- Field trip to fabric store
Week 4
- Sewing projects and patterns
Week 5
- Continuing sewing projects
Week 6
- Finalizing sewing projects
Learner Outcomes
Students will:
- Be instructed in the fundamentals of machine sewing
- Be instructed in the fundamentals of hand sewing
- Be instructed in the use and care of a sewing machine
- Develop a comfort level with the fabric store environment
- Develop a comfort level with fabrics, notions, accessories for sewing
- Complete a simple project (such as a pillow)
Notes
- Students use school-owned sewing machines
- Students purchase their own supplies - a list will be provided in the first class
- Class includes a field trip to a fabric shop
- Students must update contact information at time of registration for pre-class contact by instructor
- Required book - Singer New Sewing Essentials: Updated and Revised Edition-2008
