Course Description

This is an introductory class to beekeeping for anyone who is interested in the subject. All students will finish the course with enough information and hands-on experience to start and maintain a colony of honeybees. Students will also learn to find information so that they may expand upon their beekeeping knowledge. We will spend approximately half of our time in the classroom, and the other half will be spent in the CPCC apiary, gaining hands-on experience.

Course Outline

Class 1: How honeybees affect our world and their history.
Class 2: Honeybee biology and the life cycle of the honeybee.

Class 3: The seasons of beekeeping.
Class 4: Rules of the apiary and getting to know your beekeeping equipment.

Class 5: Hive inspections and why they are necessary.
Class 6: Apiary inspections

Class 7: Identifying diseases and how to treat them
Class: 8 Apiary inspections

Class 9: Identifying pest and how to combat them.
Class 10: Apiary inspections

Class 11: Regulations, Ordinances and extended studies.
Class 12: Apiary inspections

Class 13: How to extract honey and other resources from the apiary.
Class 14: Apiary inspections

Class 15: Review and Written Exam
Class 16: Practical Exam
 

Learner Outcomes

•     Basic knowledge of honeybees
•    The ability to identify beekeeping equipment.
•    How to start and maintain a colony of honeybees in their first year.
•    Basic understanding of how to remove and process honey supers.
•    The ability to pass the written and practical NC Beekeeping exam

 

 

 

 

Notes

Required Materials:

• The Backyard Beekeeper 5th edition by Kim Flottum.
• Students will be required to wear appropriate clothing on days we will be in the apiary.
• Students will be supplied with a veil and gloves.

•    Show up to class on time. 
•    Be respectful of your peers.
