Course Description

This course introduces the basic methods and materials of piano instruction. Emphasis is placed on basic teaching techniques and piano literature appropriate to all skill levels.

Course Outline

Weekly, Tuesdays 2:30-4. Spring Semester only, for 16 weeks. Weeks 1-8 will be focusing on general learning theory, the history of piano pedagogy, and a survey of piano teaching methods. Weeks 9-12 will focus on pre-approved observations outside of class time (based on the students’ schedules). Weeks 13-16 will return to the classroom and focus on final projects.

Learner Outcomes

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion, students will be able to identify and utilize appropriate teaching methods and materials for various levels of piano instruction.

· Students will gain an overview of the history of piano pedagogy.

· Students will develop an understanding of the stages of learning, especially in relation to music education.

· Students will acquire knowledge of the various types of beginning piano methods and how to choose appropriately for the targeted student.

· Students will practice forming lesson plans and setting reasonable goals.

· Students will analyze their own learning style and past musical educational history.

· Students will observe and respond to a series of piano lessons.

Notes

This course will include a Lab component with required lesson observations outside of the regular schedule. Students will need to secure their own transportation to the observation site. Students should already have a minimum level of intermediate competency in playing the piano to benefit from this course. Students will not be developing their own piano skills in this course.
