Course Description

Color is one of the most powerful tools an artist has at their disposal! It can be used to create mood, evoke emotion, and tell a story. In this class, we will learn about the color theories of the Old Masters and how they applied them to their paintings. We will also explore the symbolic meaning of color in art. By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of color theory and how it can be used to create powerful and expressive paintings.

Course Outline

Week 1: Introduction to Color Theory

  • Learn the basics of color theory, including the color wheel, primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, and complementary colors.
  • Explore the different ways that color can be used to create mood, atmosphere, and emphasis in a painting.
  • Create a value chart to use as reference for future paintings.

Week 2: Van Gogh's Use of Color

  • Study how Van Gogh used complementary colors, warm and cool colors, and different shades and tones to create his signature style.
  • Create a painting inspired by van Gogh's use of color.

Week 3: Wayne Thiebaud's Use of Color

  • Study the use of color in Wayne Thiebaud's paintings.
  • Pay attention to how he used bright, saturated colors to create nostalgia in his paintings of everyday objects.
  • Create a painting inspired by Thiebaud's use of color.

Week 4: Charles White's Use of Color

  • Study the use of color in Charles White's paintings.
  • Pay attention to how he used value to represent the dignity and strength Americans.
  • Create a painting inspired by White's use of color.

Week 5: Georgia O'Keeffe's Use of Color

  • Study the use of color in Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings who used color to evoke a sense of the natural world.
  • Create a painting inspired by O'Keeffe's use of color.

Week 6: Frida Kahlo's Use of Color

  • Study the use of color in Frida Kahlo's paintings and how she used color to represent her personal experiences and emotions. Create a painting that explores the symbolism of color..

Week 7: Mark Rothko's Use of Color

  • Study the use of color in Mark Rothko's paintings who used large blocks of color to create a sense of emotion and spirituality. Experiment with different techniques, such as stippling, glazing, and impasto.

Week 8: Andy Warhol's Use of Color

  • Study the use of color in Andy Warhol's paintings who used bright, saturated colors to create irony.

Learner Outcomes

This course will teach you the basics of color theory and how to apply it to your acrylic paintings. We will start by learning about the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, as well as complementary and analogous colors. We will then explore how color can be used to create different moods and effects in our paintings. Finally, we will study the use of color in some famous artworks by the Old Masters. By the end of this course, you will have a strong understanding of color theory and how to use it to create beautiful and expressive paintings.
