Course Description

This course is designed for students with little or no exposure to the Spanish language, or those who have not studied Spanish in many years. Students will be introduced to fundamental travel vocabulary and phrases, as well as cultural traits that will allow them to communicate when traveling in a Spanish-speaking country.

Course Outline

Week 1 – 3 (Introduction)

  • Greetings, Introductions of Others, and Farewells
  • The Alphabet and Pronunciation
  •  Nouns:
    • Number and Gender
    • Basic Vocabulary:
      • People & Family Members / Names of Jobs
    • Placement of Adjectives
      • Introduction: colors and basic adjectives
  • Interrogatives
  • Expressing Possession
  • Numbers 0-100

Week 3 – 5 El aeropuerto y la transportacion

  • Telling time – la hora; arrivals/departures
  • Customs – la aduana
  • Public transportation – la transportación publica (los autobuses y los trenes)
  • Renting a car and driving – el alquilar de coches y el manejar
  • Corresponding verbs: estar, ir, buscar, costar, hablar, necesitar, tomar

Week 5 - 6 Las direcciones

  • Asking for directions – las direcciones
  • Corresponding verbs: estar, hablar, ir, buscar, costar, pagar, reservar

Week 6 – 8 En el hotel

  • Looking for a hotel – Buscar un hotel
  • At the hotel – checking in and out – el registro de entrada y la salida
  • Requesting needs and speaking about problems at the hotel – pedir las necesidades y los problemas
  • Corresponding verbs: estar, costar, desear, necesitar, pagar, reservar, tener

Week 8 – 10 – Part 6 – En el restaurante
Chapters 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

  • Making reservations - reservar una mesa
  • General food terms for hungry, thirsty, tasty, spicy, etc. – las frases generales de comida y el restaurante
  • Ordering food – pedir la comida
  • Street food – la comida de la calle
  • Corresponding verbs: desear, necesitar, costar, pagar, reservar, tener

Week 10 – 12 – Part 7 – El turismo y los lugares de interés, ir de compras
Chapters 24, 25, 26,

  • Sightseeing and places of interest – el turismo y los lugares de interés
  • Shopping – ir de compras
  • Corresponding verbs: estar, desear, costar, gustar, pagar

Week 12 – 15 – Part 8 – Las emergencias, ir al medico, ir a la farmacia, y la seguridad
Chapters 27, 28, 29

  • Emergencies – las emergencias
  • Going to the doctor – ir al médico
  • Going to the pharmacy – ir a la farmacia
  • Safety – la seguridad
  • Corresponding verbs: estar, necesitar, hablar, ser

Note: Verb forms will be provided for present tense verbs in I, you, we forms only.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of travel vocabulary such as at the airport or train station, at a restaurant, shopping, directions, emergencies, and accidents
  • Demonstrate knowledge of key travel verbs in the present tense for I, you, and we, (including asking and answering questions)
  • Demonstrate correct pronunciation, even of unfamiliar words in Spanish
  • Express needs and wants while traveling, such as greetings and small talk, asking directions, using transportation, ordering food at a restaurant,  shopping, asking for assistance in emergencies, and describing symptoms at a pharmacy or with a doctor
  • Express an understanding of some cultural characteristics of Spanish-speaking countries.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS – Students are expected to:
  • Attend a minimum of 8 2-hour classes
  • Participate in class
  • Complete all assignments
  • Work on individual and/or group assignments as instructed
