Course Description

This course covers basic electrical theory, wiring diagrams/schematics, testing/diagnostic equipment. Topics include Ohm’s Law, Watt’s Law, circuit
construction, wiring diagrams and schematics, circuit testing, AC induction and permanent magnet motor basic operation, and basic troubleshooting. Upon
completion, students should understand electric motor operations. Students should also be able to effectively use wiring diagrams/schematics, and diagnostic test tools utilized to troubleshoot electrical functions of modern transportation vehicles.

Course Outline

Day 1        
Topic: Electrical Safety, Theory, Diagram/Schematic    
    Series/Parallel/Series-Parallel circuit construction, Ohm's Law, and Watt's Law    
        
Day 2        
Topic: DMM Usage & Voltage Drops    
    Starting & Charging System - how do they work, how to troubleshoot    
    Battery/Storage Systems - What a battery does, basic battery troubleshooting    
        
Day 3        
Topic:  AC Induction & Permanent Magnet Motor Basics -Signal Generators 
Transistors & Capacitors, Insulation Testing, Micro-Ohm Meter usage    
Basic Electric Vehicle Overview     

Learner Outcomes

  • Demonstrate workplace safety related to transportation electrical systems including electric vehicles.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of electrical diagnostic test equipment.
  • Use Ohm’s Law and Watt’s Law to calculate the value of any of the following given the values of the remaining variables: Voltage, Resistance, and Amperage.

Students participating in this course, in addition to CPCC’s Hybrid and EV Fleet Safety Training course (AUX8308) will prepare them to take ASE’s xEV Safety
Certifications.
