Course Description

This course will provide participants with a basic understanding of Employee Relations and how it is integrated in the HR function for the organization. Participants will review laws prohibiting discrimination, how to identify barriers to performance management, how to maintain professional neutrality and identify and understand changing role of HR Professional to partner with internal client on order to make the organization successful in meeting the competitive demands. Participants will be encouraged to develop their strategic technical and problem solving skills as well as develop strategies that are necessary to link the HR/ER program with the organization’s mission, vision, culture and business objective.

    • Poor Hiring Decisions (Employment Law Review)
    • Discrimination Claims
    • Employment-at-will
    • Prevention Strategies
  3. Handling Complaints
    1. Advising the Supervisor.
    2. Advising the Employee.
    3. Facilitating a Hearing.
    4. What in The policy?
    5. Legal implications.
  4. Program Assessment
    • What's working?
    • What’s not working?
    • What needs fine-tuning?
    • Issues for Development (Strategic Planning)

Learner Outcomes

Students will be able to (upon completion of the course):

  • Understand role of ER professional.
  • Review Employment Laws.
  • Understand the liability/impact in avoiding employee complaints.
  • Conduct a complaint hearing.
  • Understand and identify barriers that cause poor performance management.
  • Identify best practices for performance management.
  • Differentiate between HR’s policing role & HR’s partnering role.
