Course Description

This course provides you with a comprehensive plan for implementing a peer tutoring program into your classroom. You will learn about what peer tutoring is and its benefits, particularly for English Language Learners (ELLs). You will plan how to select your student participants/student tutors, strategies for training your students, and guidance for monitoring and rewarding progress. You will learn specific strategies you can teach peer tutors to support in reading fluency, writing skills, and math proficiency. By the end of the course, you will have built a complete peer tutoring plan ready for implementation, using the many resources and templates provided and ready for use in an upcoming peer tutoring session.

Course Outline

1. Peer Tutoring and its Benefits
  • The definition of peer tutoring
  • The academic and socio-emotional benefits of peer tutoring, particularly for your ELLs
2. The Logistics of Peer Tutoring
  • When to use peer tutoring
  • How to select students to participate
  • How to train and reward tutors
3. Peer Tutoring Strategies
  • Two strategies that can improve reading fluency and comprehension
  • Two strategies for improving writing skills
  • Two strategies to support math skills
4. Monitoring Your Peer Tutoring Program
  • How to monitor and support your peer tutors
  • How to track the progress of your ELLs
  • How to determine the overall effectiveness of peer tutoring
5. Putting it All Together
  • Using the sample provided, build your own peer tutoring plan for a group of students.
6. Applying What you Have Learned
  • Get ideas on how to implement the concepts into your classroom, find a list of online resources that feature peer tutoring ideas, and read the research behind this type of support in the classroom

  • Understand the purpose and benefits of peer tutoring for academic and socio-emotional support
  • Evaluate the best situation to utilize peer tutoring as you plan to select, train, and incentivize your peer tutors
  • Analyze multiple peer tutoring strategies to assist you in improving fluency, comprehension, writing, or math achievement
  • Review methods to monitor and track performance over time

Notes

This is an asynchronous online course offered through the third party vendor ed2go.  This course can be taken on either a PC, Mac, or Chromebook.  The instructional materials required for this course are included in enrollment and will be available online.  You will have three months to complete the course, and may complete the course earlier than the three month period. Editing of a Microsoft Word document is required in this course.  You may use a free version of Microsoft Word Online or Google Docs if you do not have Microsoft Office installed on your computer.
