Course Description

This course trains individuals to be assisted living administrators. The course meets the state requirement of preceptorship hours, along with online hours and in-class coursework. The coursework includes resource management, management of environmental services, finance, food services, marketing, budgeting and resident care. Preceptorships are on site at approved assisted living communities. Admittance into this class is contingent on an application process.

Course Outline

Overview of Assisted Living and Aging: Who is the Resident? Who are the family members?; Community/Facility Profile

Introduce disciplines: Regulation Introduction; Resident Rights Demonstration

Admission and Discharge; Resident Assessment and Care Plan; Medications

Medication Technician; Resident Care and Services

LHPS: Reporting Abuse Issues; Special Care Units

Environmental: Inspections and sanitation; Hair Salon; Housekeeping; MSDS; OSHA

Food Service: Diets and menus; Serving etiquette; Sanitation

Presentations: AHS/DSS; Ombudsman Presentation; Sales and Marketing; Respite Care; Competitor Visits; Crisis Management; Activities 

Resident funds: Budget/finance and operations; Revenue vs. Expenses: Staffing Dollars vs. Hours; Benefits; Creating Budgets; Scheduling

Human Resources: Hiring; Management and Supervision; Orienting/training your new associates; Disciplining your associates; Empowering your associates

Final Class and Project Presentations

Learner Outcomes

Students will learn how to be administrators in an assisted living community and prepare for the state certification exam for assisted living administrators.

Total Hours: 175 = 133 (33 hours in class + 100 clinical hours) + 42 hours online

33 In-Class hours will be held at the Merancas Campus on select Saturdays from 9 AM-3 PM with a 30-minute break. Instructors will share full schedule with all enrolled students.

100 Clinical hours will be completed at various state-approved sites during various times throughout week. 

42 Online hours will be completed self-paced via Brightspace.
