Course Description

The focus of this course shall be to review basic skills and knowledge for a backflow assembly field tester for the purpose of recertification.

  • Review Mechanical Equipment for Cross-Connection Control and Field Testing

  • History of cross-connection control development
  •  Assembly approval and the approval process
  •  Air Gap
  •  Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB)
  • Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly (PVB)
  • Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) and Double Check Detector Assembly (DCDVA)
  • Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly (RPA) and Reduced Pressure Principle Detector Assembly (RPDA)
  • Special conditions that can effect operation of assemblies
  • Unapproved devices
  •  Field test equipment
  • Tester responsibility

Learner Outcomes

  • Review and evaluate student for complete understanding and ability to perform accepted field-tests procedures for the pressure vacuum breaker assembly, double check valve assembly and the reduced pressure principle backflow prevention assembly.
  • Review and discuss record keeping and backflow program responsibilities.
  • Discuss new innovations in the field of cross connection control and backflow prevention.

Notes

Student must have Certification in Backflow Assembly testing. Student must bring a small flathead screwdriver and should dress for a wet lab environment. One hundred percent attendance is required and the re-certification exam is conducted by Charlotte Water. The student must pass both written and practical examinations to obtain Backflow Tester Certification. 

Prerequisites

Student must be able to produce their certification in Backflow Assembly Testing to Charlotte Water, as requested.
