Course Description

This course covers the fundamentals of reading and interpreting residential blueprints and estimating the quantities of materials and labor required to construct a house. The use of current technology (CAD and BIM) will be introduced and discussed. Floor and wall systems will also be discussed.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this class, students will have the basic ability to read blueprints and drawings. They will understand the various symbols and graphics typically used in drawings, understand the relationship of blueprints and specifications s "Contract Documents", understand how to do "quantity takeoffs" of materials from drawings; obtain a basic understanding of how a wood-framed residential structure goes together; obtain a basic understanding of the various materials and components used in construction; understand and utilize "construction estimating mathematics". Wall and floor systems will also be discussed.
