Course Description

This course will provide Field Training Officers with a perspective and understanding of the various roles they must fulfill and the basic requirements of their position in the field training program.

Course Outline

Studends will learn the following:

  • Explain the history and significant components of the San Jose Field Training Officer model program.
  • Identify techniques to improve interpersonal communications with the trainee assigned to field training.
  • Identify the ethical standards that an FTO must maintain and apply to the field training process.
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of the field training officer, including the techniques for teaching adults.
  • Explain the concepts of Problem-based Learning, Emotional Intelligence, and Multiple Intelligences as they apply to a field training program.
  • Safely and effectively provide scenario-based training and give performance feedback to enhance the learning process.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Observe, evaluate, and document field performance of a trainee as well as give constructive feedback based on the observed performance.
  • Apply counseling strategies to assist a trainee with improving performance and facilitate the self-discovery process.
  • Identify the need for remedial training and suggest training strategies that may be effective.
  • Discuss the civil liability associated with field training.
  • Identify the mechanics and methodology for writing professional evaluations and administrative reports.
  • Identify situations that contribute to felony assaults and accidental deaths suffered by law enforcement officers.
  • Identify and apply various leadership styles to maximize the effectiveness of the field training officer.
