Course Description

Two core decisions in interior design are furniture selection/placement and the use of lighting. Learn to wisely select furniture and lighting that will create balance, function and drama, thereby enhancing your space.

Course Outline

Class 1 - Overview

  • Introduction: What to expect from the course
  • Review course outline
  • Why space planning is essential to the interior design of your home
  • Evaluating space and function of your rooms
  • Guidelines on furniture arrangement
  • How to measure your rooms and furniture
  • Class Activity: Students work as a team to measure classroom and furniture in it.
  • Homework assignment:
  • Measure and sketch each part of your living room in plan (top) view
  • Measure rugs and each piece of furniture, and list measurements on a separate sheet of paper
  • You will need a metal measuring tape, pencil, and paper
  • This is best done with a partner; one to measure, and one to write down measurements.
  • Bring to class:
  • Sketch of living room or family room (plan view), with measurements
  • Measurements of each rug, and piece of furniture on a separate sheet of paper

Class 2 – Create two furniture layouts on for your living room and/or family room

  • Homework assignment: Email photos of your room. If you move your furniture according to your two layouts, also email photos of those new arrangements to instructor and they will be used in a PowerPoint presentation for class.
    Optional: Also, email photos of proposed rug or furniture purchases for your room.

Class 3 – PowerPoint presentation and discussion of student furniture layouts

  • Residential Lighting - how to plan your lighting for function, beauty, and drama

Class 4 - Field trip to a lighting showroom

 

Learner Outcomes

Students will learn how to:

  • Evaluate the functionality and space of your rooms
  • Plan your furniture arrangements on paper
  • Plan future purchases, based on size and space
  • Enhance your home with lighting
