Course Description

Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG) for Law Enforcement: Students will learn what FIGG is and how it works. The various ways law enforcement can use it as an investigative tool to solve cases will be the primary focus of this course. The FIGG process from the crime scene to the identification of the offender will be explored. The types of DNA evidence used for FIGG will be evaluated. CODIS vs FIGG will be explained. FIGG terminology, tools, and databases will be explained. DNA types and the DNA lab process will be examined. Using DNA and standard genealogy tools to identify an unknown suspect or victim will be demonstrated. Case studies will be used to highlight all training objectives. Building family trees and the importance of SUR names along with Genealogy Research Tips & Tricks will be examined.
