Course Description
The goal of this course is to offer you many valuable learning experiences, combining classroom learning with immediate opportunities to practice new skills. This course addresses skills and strategies required for success in post-secondary and employment settings, including organization and executive functioning, emotion regulation, and professional social skills. The course consists of 3 components: class instruction, individual and group counseling, and a volunteer internship opportunity.Course Outline
During this course, students will:1. Create an individualized goal plan for future career and college goals and learn how to monitor success towards reaching their goals.
2. Attend Career Counseling sessions with a T-STEP instructor and access appropriate career counseling resources.
3. Learn organization and time management strategies that will be practiced in class and in a volunteer internship setting.
4. Learn and practice self-monitoring and self-reward strategies.
5. Attend Higher Education Counseling sessions with a T-STEP facilitator and access appropriate resources.
6. Learn college and employment-related social skills (including how to seek help when needed). Strategies will be practiced in class and volunteer internship settings.
7. Learn strategies for coping with distress and appropriately accepting corrective feedback from an instructor or supervisor. Strategies will be practiced in class and volunteer internship settings.
8. Develop use of self-advocacy skills during sessions with a T-STEP facilitator and practice use of these skills in post-secondary and/or volunteer internship settings.
During the semester, you will complete at least 12 hours of virtual internship work with a staff or faculty
member as your supervisor. This will be approximately 1-2 hours per week. During the second-class session,
you will learn more about the internships. There will be at least 4 Internship Support Meetings to discuss the
internship, role play interviewing skills, discuss feedback regarding your internship interview, as well as
discussing virtual internship experiences and opportunities
