Course Description

The advanced mosaic class is for students who have completed at least one section of Mosaics for the Home and Garden (CSP-AVO 8721) and feel confident in their cutting ability.


In this class, we will explore more advanced techniques of andamento, color theory, art theory, and adding perspective to your work. We will explore the use of ceramics, smalti, and fused glass in our mosaics and will work on creating mosaic portraits of animals and people.  We will work on one different technique or medium per session and students will also work independently on projects of their choosing.

Course Outline

We will cover the following topics; order of lessons may vary:

2 classes on smalti - class 1 - cutting techniques using nippers and a hammer and hardie

Smalti class 2 - adhesives for use with smalti - thinset, Weldbond, how to tint your thinset

Advanced grouting techniques - class 1 - using paint in unsanded grout to tint your grout to create a painterly mosaic.  

Advanced grouting 2 - painting your grout after it is applied to create a painterly mosaic

Advanced grouting 3 - using translucent grout- how to mix it with correct ratios of each part, cleaning translucent grout off of the glass.  

Abstract contemporary mosaics - 2 classes on creating abstract mosaics using minerals, smalti, beads, shells, etc to create dimension and texture in your abstract mosaics

Pet portraits - designing and creating your mosaic pet portrait, cutting your glass to create movement in the fur, creating the nose and eyes out of glass.  

Learner Outcomes

Students will gain advanced skills in mosaics and will improve their understanding of art and color theory. They will hone their mosaic technique skills to produce increasing complex and beautiful works of art.
