Course Description

This course will cover developing a resume, interview preparation, submitting applications, and job search strategies. Students will learn the components of an effective resume, including organization and formatting, and how to customize their own resumes to convey greater confidence. Learners will also gain life skills and develop a positive self-concept that will enhance their employability and job performance, including the opportunity for a professional dress outfitting. All learners will also register for NC Works and can prepare and practice for the Career Readiness Certificate (CRC). Participants will identify their strengths and how they relate to career success, develop their personal brands and "elevator speeches" and learn how to ask and answer interview questions to get the job. Students will learn how to make sure their resume stands out and survives the competitive online sorting  process to land in the hands of employers.

Course Outline

Learners enrolled will gain skills and knowledge to do the following:

  1. Develop a positive self-concept, building confidence in their employability skills.
  2. Develop job readiness skills, including workplace behavior and ethics.
  3. Learn how to create and update a resume and how to communicate effectively in the interview process.
  4. Develop short term and long term career goals
  5. Prepare for the Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) examination
  6. Register for NCWorks
  7. Successfully complete job applications

You may enroll in HRD classes at NO CHARGE if you meet any of the following criteria: unemployed, notified of a pending layoff, eligible for the Federal EITC, or receiving wages at or below 200% of the poverty level.
