Course Description
Express your creativity in the popular art of floral design with this hands-on class! While creating your own arrangements, learn principles of basic floral arranging/design while creating beautiful arrangements. Under the guidance of our expert instructor, learn to properly condition fresh flowers, use floral foam, tape and wire. This hands-on course is designed for beginners, but is open to all skill levels. This class is the first in our 5-part series leading to the Floral Design Certificate. It is a prerequisite for all other floral design classes in the certificate series. Completion of the entire certificate series has given skilled students the opportunity to pursue careers in the floral design field. Current floral designers may attend this program to update and expand their skills.Course Outline

Students will learn:
- How to properly handle and care for fresh flowers and foliage
- How to create basic centerpieces using fresh flowers and foliage

Notes
- Class is held in the Overcash Building on Central Campus in room 158. To reach the room, please enter Overcash from the E. Fourth St. entrance. Proceed to the classroom at the end of the hall. Entry by any other entrance will make locating this classroom difficult. - Students purchase flowers and floral supplies for each class. (Students must provide current email address and cell phone number for pre-class communication from instructor, listing supplies needed for first class.) Required supplies to be purchased by students include $25+ per week for fresh flowers (cost largely dependent on the flowers you choose) and tools (which will be used for all floral design classes).
- This class is a required pre-requisite for all other floral design classes offered at Central Piedmont. No exceptions based on previous experience are allowed.
- First day, on-time attendance is MANDATORY for this course. If you miss the first class, you will not be allowed to remain in the class, nor will you receive a refund for fees paid.
- There is no required book for this class.
- ***Students will be making a short stemmed, rounded bouquet in the first class. For this class, students must bring the following items:
- 5" round cylinder, 5" tall ( approximately)
- A bunch of mixed flowers- available at Trader Joes
- Large bucket of mixed greenery from yard (in water) - *** NOTE: No purchased greenery is allowed; it must be obtained from a yard.
- 7" electrical pliers with wire cutter
- Quality garden pruners
- 1/2" Oasis brand clear tape
- Sharp floral knife for stem cutting
- Supplies for the following class periods will be explained and discussed in the first class.
- Students must pass each individual skill taught in this class in order receive a passing grade, a requirement to receive a floral certificate.
