Course Description

This two day seminar will introduce attendees to Forensic Odontology.  Students will learn to differentiate between a human bite mark and other types of injuries resembling a bite mark.  Emphasis will center on the importance of proper collection and preservation procedures.

  1. Causes of Bite marks 
    • Teeth influence on bite marks
    • Crushing the tissue
  2. Collecting Evidence from the Bitemark 
    • Swabbing
    • Tooth Impressions
  3. Photographing the Bitemark 
    • Initial Photograph
    • Bruise/Pattern Development
  4. Mass Disasters 
    • D-Mort
    • Identification

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand how bite marks are caused
  • Collect and preserve evidence from the bite mark
  • Photograph the bruising associated with the bite mark
  • Use the bite mark as a source of identification

  • Class Participation:  Students will process a mock crime scene using all techniques demonstrated during the class
