Course Description

Under the guidance of our experienced studio artist, gain insight into painting techniques such as paint mixing, color, texture, tone, space and picture composition. Feedback and suggestions for your individual growth will be given as you work on these techniques. Unfinished paintings will be finished at home at your own pace.

Course Outline

Class 1:  Introductions
                 Go over syllabus and expectations
                 Color Wheel Painting –Mix using only primary colors
                 Value Scale -Monochromatic
                 Brushes- what to use and how to clean

Class 2:   Abstract Painting
                 Small canvas recommended
                 All students learn about color relationships, how to mix colors, gradient colors, glazing, wet on wet, texture techniques, dry brush, using masking tape,                           layering, sgraffito

Class 3:   Begin Landscape painting ·
                 Follow Along Demo on landscape painting. ·
                 Teach rule of thirds, positive and negative space, foreground middle ground and background, blending, creating depth etc. ·
                 Review techniques from first day
                 NEXT CLASS Bring canvas to instructor to trace animal on surface

Class 4:   Follow along Demonstration to continue adjust landscape painting ·
                 Demonstrate final techniques ·
                 Finishing touches
                 Give canvas to Instructor to prepare for next class

Class 5:    Palette Knife Animals ·
                  Learn texture painting with Palette Knife ·
                  Painting demonstration and Individual check ins

 

Class 6:   Monochromatic Painting 
                 Paint from still life or object 
                 Demo on Monochromatic techniques 
                 How to paint with a light source 
                 Under painting 
                 Use your value scale in painting 
                 Instructor will help each individual as needed
                 Instructor will give Ideas for final painting

Class 7:   Final painting of Choice Working class ·
                 Help each individual as needed

Class 8:   Painting Celebration discussion and Final Painting Working Class
                 30-40 min Group discussion on one painting of choice
                  Ask students to share what they learned
                  Use this time to finish your final painting or any other painting from class you need to complete.
                  Instructor will help each individual as needed with final painting
                  Finish anything that has not been finished at home.

Learner Outcomes

Students will become familiar with:

· Basic supplies used in acrylic painting and how to use them

· How to mix colors and values

· How to hold the brush in several ways to create different strokes

· Proper care of brushes for longevity and best results

· Various acrylic techniques

· How to create a balanced composition

Supply List

For the SECOND CLASS, bring the following supplies to each class and take them home with you at the end of each class. No supplies can be left in the classroom.

Supplies can be purchased at Michael’s Arts and Crafts, Hobby Lobby, Jerry’s Artarama, Amazon, or any source of your choice. You can also bring supplies you already have.

Required Supplies Description/ Recommendations

Acrylic Paint brushes A variety in size (1/32” - 1”) and shape (flat and round) 6-20 brushes in flat and round varieties. Fan brush-optional

Acrylic Paint (our focus is on Acrylic, but you may bring watercolors and oil paint in addition to acrylic)
                       Required colors: black, white, red, yellow, and blue; I recommend a variety of colors to allow for a variety of options for paintings
                       Recommended Brands: Golden, Blick or Liquitex Any other acrylic brand paints, (Artecho, Amsterdam, Americana, Craftsman, will work for this class.)

Palette Wooden, Plastic, Paper Pads or Plates

4-5 Painting Surfaces in various sizes
                      Recommended: Canvases- sizes between 9 x 12 and 16 x 20 inches
                      You can also use Canvas paper or Acrylic Paper. If you bring paper, a drawing  board and tape is also recommended

Cup or Container for Water- You can bring anything from disposable cups to a plastic container or a glass jar

Cleaning Cloth Rags, Paper Towels, Napkins

Pencils and Erasers for making drawing corrections on paintings

Palette Knife Plastic or Metal - any shape
 

Optional Additional Supplies Description

Apron or Smock Something to cover your clothes to prevent acrylic paint stains

Brush organizer or holder Plastic or Fabric Wrap

Mediums: Matte Medium, Gloss Medium, Gel Medium

Brush Cleaner- Brush cleaner and Restorer, Dish Soap
