Course Description
This 8 hour course will discuss firearm related injuries and distance determinations (both gunshot residues and shotgun pattern analysis). The course will focus on applying various scientific methods, testing protocols, reproduction and comparison of gunpowder and primer residues in order to determine the muzzle-to-garment distance. Additionally, the course will include various firearms related injuries found on bodies and other mediums. This course is a basic course for EMS personnel.Course Outline

- Lecture pertaining to distance determination, including gunpowder residues and shotgun pattern analysis
- Hands-on demonstrations utilizing various firearms
- Case studies
- Numerous practical exercises consisting of handgun and shotgun pattern analysis
- Lecture involving firearms related injuries found on human bodies
- Lecture by medical doctor regarding these issues
Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to complete the following:
- Recognize the basic issues involving firearms related injuries
- Understand potential forensic evidence involving gun shot wounds
- Protect more evidence found on bodies and other mediums
- Understand the basics for gunshot residue and shotgun analysis as it relates to EMS
