Course Description

This online course is provides an overview of digital evidence and the variety of electronic storage media that may be found or observed during vehicle stops and searches. Students will obtain a brief outline of search and seizure guides and consent search issues. Electronic storage media will be identified along with the potential amount of data that correlates. This class will provide patrol and investigative officers an excellent overview of digital evidence found in vehicles and physical searches done today.

  1. Overview of basic search and seizure issues
  2. Vehicle stop information and consent searches
  3. Types of digital media used in vehicles
  4. Search tips and law enforcement issues
  5. 4th amendment examples and cases

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to complete the following:

  • Recognize different types of digital media that may be found in vehicles
  • Handle recovery of laptops and other computer related items in vehicles
  • Experience with search and seizure issues involving vehicles or residential searches while on patrol
