Course Description

This 32-hour course provides an assessment of what to expect in the courtroom when a digital evidence case is involved, as well as requirements for delivering expert testimony. It covers the current status of digital forensic evidence from both the scientific and legal perspectives in both criminal and civil cases. Students will see suggestions from prosecutors on testimony relating to digital evidence. Students will also see the process of qualifying an expert in court by prosecution and defense. Included are breakdowns and explanations regarding the different media and binary terms. This course will prepare all law enforcement officers with a good basic understanding of digital evidence expertise including audio forensics, video forensics, mobile device forensics, computer forensics, courtroom preparation terms, and general strategy for good testimony involving digital forensics as a whole.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to complete the following:

  • Articulate digital evidence investigatory strategies and examination procedures as well as recognize evidence admissibility issues related to digital evidence.
  • Determine pertinent information to look for when collecting, analyzing, and testifying to different disciplines within Digital Forensics
  • Students will walkaway with more confidence in their understanding of digital terms, descriptions and testimony expertise in this area.
