Course Description

This online course will provide the law enforcement officer, whether they are patrol, investigators or crime scene personnel, with some basic background information regarding wireless networks and information pertaining to investigations that involve wireless technology.  This course will cover information on wireless hardware, software, and wireless standards along with cell phones and how they may come into play during an investigation. We will introduce Bluetooth information and discuss issues for the protection of digital evidence and wireless devices. A better understanding about wireless networks and new technology today will also be covered.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to complete the following:

  • Have an understanding of basic computer network and radio frequency concepts sufficient to support wireless networking topics
  • Discuss in detail, the features and functions of wireless networking, including theory and practical application
  • Recall the major components of a wireless network by identifying terms, diagrams and illustrations
  • Prioritize strengths and vulnerabilities of wireless security implementations
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of a wireless network investigative response
  • Be introduced to legal issues relating to capture of wireless network data
  • Be able to plan for and select equipment needed when conducting a basic wireless network response
  • Select facts concerning  non-network wireless technology
