Course Description

This seminar is designed to address the expanded role of the death investigator, providing the basic knowledge and skills that will ensure future success.  The seminar focuses on 52 skills critical to the professional death investigator, covering such topics as scene investigations, interactions with other agencies, evidence collection, scientific knowledge, and communications.

 

Course Outline

1.

  • Interpretation of physical injuries
  • Estimate time of death
  • Obtain evidence based on type of death

2.

  • Identify the presence of a bite mark
  • Understand the value of bitemarks
  • Properly photograph bite marks

3.

  • Identify human skeletal remains
  • Locate human remains
  • Mapping the outdoor death scene
  • Collecting and transporting human remains

4.

  • Use of insect eggs
  • Collecting insect evidence
  • Rearing larva
  • Unique requirements

Learner Outcomes

  • Appropriately involve Forensic Pathology in death investigations.
  • Obtain Bite Mark Evidence from a variety of victims.
  • Properly collect and preserve skeletal remains.
  • Collect and preserve insect evidence.
