Course Description

This 40 hour online class is designed to familiarize the crime scene detective or technician with the basic requirements of crime scene photography. Students will become more knowledgeable with the use of light, exposure, shutter speed and the general functions of cameras along with the important principles of photography as related to evidence and crime scenes. Students will also learn how to identify the elements of a good and technical photograph.

  2. Types of Cameras and Lens
  3. Camera Functions and Menu Options
  4. Exposure
  5. Aperture, Shutter Speeds and ISO
  6. Depth of Field and Focus
  7. Basic Crime Scene SOPS
  8. Lighting and Flash Photography
  9. Properly Photographing Evidence
  10. Use of Tripods

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to complete the following:

  • Successfully photograph a crime scene.
  • More knowledgeable with the use of manual settings regarding aperture, shutter speed and the use of ISO.
  • Capable of identifying the elements of technical photography.
  • Properly photograph evidence.
  • Learn the various uses of lighting, flash photography and other techniques used to illuminate crime scenes.
  • Photograph evidence in minimal light and no light crime scenes.
