Course Description

This 24 hour training course is designed for experienced Detectives and Investigators, new police officers and First Responders. The class introduces the study of investigation, interpreting and processing wounds and pattern injuries.  The collection and identification of this evidence is covered in the class along with unique case histories that will re-enforce the experienced investigator on what is needed to improve on the investigation and what may be missed in making a good criminal case. This unique hands on training makes this a unique course. Students will train with a variety of forensic dummies and other medium during practical exercises in an indoor and outdoor field environment.

Course Outline

  1. GUNSHOT WOUNDS
    • Learn about bullets and shells, homicide vs. suicide, mechanism of shooting, two types of GSR, abrasion collar, smudging and smoke, tattooing or stippling, contact wounds, distance determination, ricochet wounds, shotgun, distant, intermediate and contact ranges.
  2. KNIFE WOUNDS
    • Learn about knife wound categories, characteristics of cutting wounds, stabbing wounds, and defensive wounds. 
  3. BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA WOUNDS
    • Learn about the appearance of blunt force injuries, lacerations, and chopping wounds.
  4. VEHICLE CRASH WOUNDS AND INJUIRES
    • Learn about the life threatening injuries from car accidents, head injuries, neck injuries, penetrating chest injuries, penetrating abdominal injuries, fractured skulls, ribs and extremities, and major joint dislocations. 
  5. ELECTRUCUTION WOUNDS AND INJURIES
    • Learn how electricity damages skin and internal organs, and the 3 ways electricity can cause injury and or death.
  6. HANGING WOUNDS AND INJURIES
    • Learn the definition of a hanging, obstructed blood flow, furrows, suspension points, abrasion and contusions.
  7. STRANGULATION WOUNDS AND INJURIES
    • Learn the definition of strangulation, two types of strangulation's, ligature and its common signs.  
  8. TRAUMATIC CRUSH WOUNDS AND Injuries
    • Learn how it is caused, external signs on the body, mechanism of injuries, crush injuries, external and internal forces.
  9. THERMAL WOUNDS AND INJURIES
    • Learn the definition of a thermal burn, classifications of thermal burns, and the three common types of thermal burns.
  10. CHEMICAL WOUNDS AND INJURIES
    • Learn the definition of a chemical burn, the main types of irritants, how chemical burns vary, symptoms, causes, and how they occur.
  11. BITE MARK WOUNDS AND INJUIRES
    • Learn about the types of cases associated with bite marks, how bite marks can link a suspect to a victim, preserving bite marks, and forensic odonatologist’s
  12. DOG ATTACK WOUNDS AND INJURIES
    • Learn about puncture and tearing wounds, crushing injuries, internal tissue damage, most common targets of dog attacks, and physical injuries and scars.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to complete the following:

  • Better understanding of basic wound analysis and wound injury
  • Discuss in detail, the types of wounds and wound patterns
  • Understand the types of wounds with knife and blunt trauma injury
  • Recognize evidence with other types of injury and death
