Course Description

This course is designed to prepare experienced officers for the task of training newly hired employees who have successfully completed state-Mandated basic training programs. Lecture and practical exercises are the primary methods used to conduct this training. Course content includes the role of the field training officer, the training function, interpersonal communication skills, ethics, civil liability, report writing and evaluations. Leadership skills, performance evaluations, principles of counseling, and problem solving.

Course Outline

  • Ensuring that new officers are capable of meeting or exceeding standards of performance.
  • Providing remedial training to a newly hired officer in those areas where deficiencies are identified.
  • Building on the foundation of knowledge given in basic school thereby creating an environment in which the newly hired may develop new skills.
  • Improving the Police Department's screening process by providing on-the-job observation of each newly hired officer's performance.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the duties and responsibilities of the field training officer.
  • Explain the evaluation process.
  • Explain the NRT (Not Responding to Training) syndrome.
  • Create a balance for deficiencies previously identified through remedial training.
  • Realize and understanding the civil liability of the field training officer.

Prerequisites

Must have successfully completed Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) through a recognized State of North Carolina law enforcement agency and be a certified law enforcement officer or detention officer.
