Course Description

This course is designed to update the standardized field sobriety tests and certify Officer in DWI Detection and Enforcement. This course satisfies the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandatory 2 year SFST Refresher.

Instructional content is provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Learner Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will successfully achieve the following objectives in accordance with the information presented during class and practical exercises:

  • Recognize and interpret evidence of DWI violations.
  • Administer and interpret validated psychophysical standardized field sobriety tests.
  • Describe DWI evidence clearly and convincingly.
  • Review the administration and interpretation of the SFST battery.
  • Properly observe and record subject’s performance utilizing the standard note-taking guide.
  • Review the trial preparation and testimony process.
  • Be provided with updated information on the SFST program and related case law.
  • Define the term “drug” in the context of DWI enforcement.
  • Name the major categories of drugs.
  • Describe the observable signs generally associated with the major drug categories.
  • Describe the ARIDE training program.

Prerequisites

Students must be sworn Law Enforcement Officers and must have successfully completed the NHTSA SFST Basic School.
