Course Description

This course is designed to develop knowledge and skills used by Criminal Justice personnel who are authorized to use RADAR equipment used by their departments.  Lecture, demonstration, and practical field exercises are the principal methods of instruction.  Employment in the field of Criminal Justice and authorization of the department are prerequisites for enrollment in this course.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

Operate RADAR in North Carolina as specified on their certifications issued by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

  • Present accurate and complete testimony for court purposes.
  • Accurately estimate vehicular speed and obtain proper speed readings utilizing RADAR instruments.
  • Officers will know and be able to explain all functions of any RADAR instruments on which they receive instruction.
  • Officers will be competent on the operation and testing of these instruments and will be familiar with case law and court rulings affecting the use of RADAR equipment.

 

Notes

Method of Instruction: Lecture and Practical Exercises

Evaluation:

  • State proctored written exam. Students must score a minimum of 70%.
  • Students will be required to estimate vehicular speed in accordance with criteria specified on a standardized performance evaluation form. Demonstrate 100% competence in the setup, test for accuracy and operation of any RADAR instrument the training seeks certification on.
  • Class participation is required with 100% attendance and participation in all classroom and practical exercises.

Prerequisites

  • Must be employed or appointed as a law enforcement officer by a State or local law enforcement agency or be a federal law enforcement officer.
  • Hold general or probationary law enforcement officer certification and have successfully completed BLET.
  • Provide, for practice and testing, the RADAR instrument(s) on which the trainee seeks certification.
