Course Description

The LIDAR Operator Course is a State Certification Course.  Officers will receive classroom and practical instruction on the use of LIDAR equipment.  Officers will be required to participate in practical exercises utilizing the LIDAR equipment.  Upon successful completion of the course Officers will receive an operator certification from the State allowing them to operate LIDAR instruments in North Carolina. 

Course Outline

  • Basic principles of LIDAR speed measurement
  • Identification and description of major components and features of LIDAR systems
  • Practical exercises learning how to use LIDAR equipment

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the basic principles of LIDAR speed measurement.
  • Acquire and demonstrate basic skills in testing and operating specific LIDAR instruments in accordance with criteria specified on a standardized performance evaluation form. 
  • Identify specific LIDAR instruments and describe their major components and features. 
  • Identify laws, court rulings, regulations, policies and procedures affecting LIDAR speed measurement and speed enforcement. 
  • Acquire and demonstrate basic skills in preparing and presenting records and testimony relating to LIDAR speed measurement and enforcement.

Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration and Practical Exercises

Evaluation:

  • Proctored written state examination will be administered. Students must score a minimum of 70%.
  • The trainee must demonstrate 100% competence in the setup, test for accuracy and operation of the LIDAR instrument(s) for which the trainee seeks certification in accordance with criteria specified on a standardized performance evaluation form.
  • Students are required to attend 100% of instructional hours. Satisfactory completion on all assigned course work during the scheduled course delivery period.

Prerequisites

  • This course is being offered to sworn Law Enforcement Officers only.
  • Officers are required to bring vehicle with LIDAR equipment for practice and testing.
