Course Description

This course will allow the student the be able to locate, test, and maintain a dependable water supply. This course will also teach the student to properly operate and test a fire hydrant to establish a water supply when other sources are not readily available.

Course Outline

NFPA 24, Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their Appurtenances
NFPA 1142, Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills and Hazardous Materials Response, 4th edition.

Learner Outcomes

  • Describe how municipal water systems supply water to communities.
  • Describe the common guidelines that govern the location of fire hydrants.
  • List the types of fire hydrants.
  • Describe the characteristics of dry-barrel hydrants.
  • Describe the characteristics of wet-barrel hydrants.
  • Explain the principles of fire hydraulics.
  • Describe how water flow is measured.
  • Describe how water pressure is measured.
  • Compare potential and kinetic energy.
  • Describe the similarities between static pressure and normal operating pressure of a system.

Notes

Method of Instruction: Course will utilize lecture as well as hands on simulation training to facilitate learning.

Evaluation: Student will be evaluated via written exam as well as simulation skill testing.
