Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint officer candidates with the many interpersonal and administrative duties of a company officer. Interpersonal topics covered include communications, public relations and education, and dealing with public inquiries and concerns. Emphasis is placed on human resources and the performance review and development process. Administrative topics covered include the Charlotte Fire Department Operations Manual, the Charlotte Fire Department Strategic Plan, the Charlotte Fire Department Annual Report, budget management, employee benefits, leave time, payroll, fire department information technology, computer-aided dispatch, and records management. Students will review basic code enforcement information and fire cause determination.

Course Outline

The curriculum combines the fundamentals taught in an open water class with an emphasis on the exacting skills required to successfully dive in a rescue/recovery operation.

Learner Outcomes

This program will provide fundamental knowledge for divers responding to incidents involving underwater rescue/recovery operations. The student will be proficient in basic Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus skills, Proper use and maintenance of SCUBA, dive related injuries, diving physics, physiology and the use of Navy Dive Tables.

Notes

Method of Instruction: Lecture and Practical Application conducted in a pool and open water environment.

Evaluation: Written Exam (80% required) and Swim Test (Minimum score of 12)

Prerequisites

  • Must be a member of a public safety agency.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must complete a pre-swim test.
  • Must complete a medical evaluation.
