Course Description

This course will allow currently credentialed EMTs to complete a field internship with local fire and EMS agencies.  This will provide students with the experience of the daily emergency services operations.

Course Outline

  • North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) scope of practice for EMT.
  • National Standard EMS curriculum.
  • Mecklenburg County First Responder Protocols

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course students will have completed the following:

  • Describe the dispatch phase of an emergency response.
  • Conduct an initial scene assessment.
  • List and discuss rationale behind any additional resources.
  • Describe your general impression of your patient/ patients.
  • Conduct an initial patient assessment and provide a treatment plan.
  • Conduct a detailed patient assessment and provide a treatment plan.
  • Describe any pertinent changes in your patient and discuss the treatment rendered. 
  • Discuss your transport decision and destination.

Method of Instruction:

  • Clinical interaction with skills evaluation
  • Brightspace will be used to document patient contacts.

  • Skills evaluation
  • Graded Brightspace entries

Prerequisites

  • All students must have a current EMT credential.
