Course Description

Discussion of pre-hospital care as it relates to Legal Ethics in EMS today. Discussions include how the EMT will work within the legal aspects and laws of the community. Students will be taught patient rights and laws that specifically protect EMTs as they interact with patients.

Learner Outcomes

  • Define the First Responder scope of practice and care
  • Define and differentiate between expressed and implied consent
  • Discuss the implications for First Responder for patients to refuse care
  • Explain the importance, necessity and legality of patient confidentiality
  • Clarify advance directives and Do Not Resuscitate procedures
  • Discuss the actions that First Responders should take to assist in preserving crime scenes
