Course Description

This course will provide students with the skills and operational roles that they will need to participate as an EMT when dealing with an active shooter situation. It will allow them to see the roles other first responder agencies will use to mitigate an emergency of this type and how they will interact with them.

Learner Outcomes

Students will be able to recognize and demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Define and recognize an active shooter incident.
  • Demonstrate their role as an EMT in an active shooter incident.
  • Understand the roles of other agencies that make up the mitigation team of an active shooter incident.
  • The student will understand their position in the incident command structure of this type of incident.
  • Define the terms and meaning of the components of an active shooter incident.
  • Define locations of treatment for patients of these incidents.
  • Understand and demonstrate the protocols that are provided for these incidents.
  • Define the START triage system.
