Course Description

The PHTLS course provides a prehospital trauma care philosophy, stressing the need to treat the multisystem trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs.  The course follows the curriculum developed by the National Association of EMT's committee on Prehospital Trauma Life Support. Successful completion of the class results in a 4 year certification.

Learner Outcomes

At the conclusion of the class the student should be able to:

  • Provide a description of the pathophysiology and kinematics of injury.
  • Provide an understanding of the need for rapid assessment when dealing with a trauma patient.
  • Show advancement in knowledge with regard to patient examination and diagnostic skills.
  • Correctly and efficiently assess and treat a trauma patient.
  • Demonstrate an increased competence with regard to specific prehospital trauma interventional skills.
  • Correctly manage a multisystem trauma patient in the prehospital setting.

Evaluation:

  • Attends the entire course
  • Demonstrates all skills as outline in the PHTLS textbook
  • Achieves a score of 75% on the written test
  • Successful completion of a final assessment station as a team leader

  • Current NC EMT Certification
