Course Description

The course will cover the current trauma triage models including SMART Triage system.

This course will teach students the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient, suffering from head, neck, and spinal injuries.

This course will help the EMT to identify the signs and symptoms of bleeding and shock and help them to treat these types of injuries.

Learner Outcomes

Discuss basic triage techniques.

Discuss triage terminology and reasoning.

  • Discuss the START Triage process.
  • Demonstrate the START Triage Process
  • Recognize life treating head, neck, and spinal injuries.
  • Explain the pathophysiology and assessment of a patient with a head, neck, and spinal injuries.
  • Describe the management of patients with <span>head, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Identify the equipment necessary to safely transport a patient with head, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Differentiate between arterial, venous, and capillary bleeding.
  • State methods of emergency medical care of internal and external bleeding
  • State  the steps in the emergency medical care of the patient with signs and symptoms of shock (hypoperfusion).

 

Notes

Method of Instruction: 

  • Online or In-Person Lecture
  • Skill practice in triage, spinal immobilization and hemorrhage control.

Evaluation: 

  • Written Exam
  • Class Participation

  • This course meets the NCOEMS continuing education requirements for trauma triage, CNS Injuries, and hemorrhage control.
