Course Description

This course will review all aspects of endocrine and immunological emergencies at the EMT education level. This class will review diabetes, allergic and anaphylactic reactions, sickle cell anemia and crisis, clotting disorders, and septic shock.

Course Outline

  • Review anatomy and physiology of the immune and endocrine systems.
  • Discuss signs and symptoms for hypo/hyperglycemia, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, sickle cell crisis, sepsis, and -----
  • Review treatment options for hypo/hyperglycemia, allergic reactions, sickle cell crisis, hemophilia, DVTs, and sepsis,
  • Review the use oral glucose, epinephrine, Benadryl, oxygen, and albuterol.
  • Demonstrate patient assessments presenting with immunological and endocrine emergencies.

Learner Outcomes

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of diabetic emergencies, hypo/hyperglycemia.
  • Explain treatment options for diabetic emergencies
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of hyper/hypothyroidism and acute adrenal crisis
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of allergic and anaphylactic reactions. Differentiate between the two.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of sickle cell crisis
  • Review clotting disorders: hemophilia, DVT, PE
  • Review assessment and management of sepsis and septic shock
