Course Description

Neurological emergencies primarily are strokes and seizures in the realm of EMS. However, we also can see altered mental status from diabetes, sepsis or hypoxia, to name a few. This course will teach the EMT how to assess and treat Neurological emergencies in the field. The course will cover toxic exposures and treatment options associated with the type of exposure. You will learn how different toxins effect the human body and how to safely evaluate the patient. You will also learn how to handle patients with psychological disorders. We will discuss what signs to be aware of and how to protect yourself as well as your patient.

Learner Outcomes

  • Explain the signs and systems of a stoke, seizure, diabetes, sepsis or hypoxia.
  • Explain the use stroke scales to assess patients with potential neurological abnormalities.
  • Describe how to assess and treat a seizure patient.
  • Describe and demonstrate how to assess and treat a patient having a diabetic issue, (this includes how to get a BGL sample and what medications an EMT can administrate).
  • Distinguish toxic exposure based on patient presentations and treatment options based off of the presentation of the patient.
  • Discuss alcohols, street drugs, stimulants, antidepressants and analgesics and how they effect the body.
  • Discuss signs and system's of Psychological trauma, (PTSD), and traumatic stress associated with the patient and what to look out for.
  • Explain how to handle a patient with a psychological disorder.
