Course Description

Interested in learning the basic jewelry and metalsmithing techniques to create your own jewelry? Don’t miss this opportunity to work at the best fully equipped jewelry studio CPCC and the Queen City have to offer. Join us for this 8-week introductory class that will go beyond your expectations. Students will focus on learning basic jewelry and metalsmithing techniques in a fun and creative way.

In this basic jewelry class, students will learn sawing, piercing, forming, soldering, stone setting, and patination, as well as ring making and chain making. At the end of this course each student will have a basic understanding on jewelry making and studio equipment.

Course Outline

Supplies will be discussed in the first class. Students should bring own jeweler's needle files, bastard file, and jeweler’s pliers. Student accident insurance required.

  1. Introduction to the Jewelry Studio at CPCC
  2. Proper use of hand tools
  3. Proper use of the jewelry making materials
  4. Choosing the right tool for the right application
  5. Techniques such as sawing, piercing, forming, soldering, stone setting, and patination.
  6. Ring making and chain making.

Group critique at the end of the class.

Learner Outcomes

The emphasis of  the class is hands-on skills. The proper use of hand and power tools will be covered so that students can gain confidence in their ability.   The class will provide a solid foundation of techniques as students explore their own original designs.
