Course Description
This course covers skills and strategies designed to provide employability skills training and career exploration for the role of Income Maintenance Caseworker, Human Services Specialist, or Eligibility Specialist within Division or Department of Social Service agencies.
Human services specialists help people determine if they are eligible for benefits such as Food and Nutrition Services, Work First Family Assistance, and Medicaid. This is done by gathering & entering data into the NCFast system, verifying customer information and processing applications and re-certifications. In the caseworker training program, you will learn:
- employability skills and keyboarding
- customer service and client interviewing
- NC FAST computer application navigation
- time management and data collection
Course Outline
The curriculum addresses the following topics:
- History and overview of the Department of Social Services and its NCFAST Data Entry System
- Technology awareness, data entry and keyboarding skills
- Interviewing skills and resumes
- Workplace success skills
- Customer service
- DSS and NCFAST terminology
- Navigation skills in the NCFAST system
- Work Keys assessments (CRC)
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate an understanding/proficiency in the following:
- entry-level skills required to be an employee of DSS
- basic computer and keyboarding skills
- interviewing skills and resumes
- workplace success skills
- customer service skills
- DSS and NC FAST terminology
- basic navigation skills in the NC FAST system
Notes
You may enroll in HRD classes at NO CHARGE if you meet any of the following criteria: unemployed, notified of a pending layoff, eligible for the Federal EITC, or receiving wages at or below 200% of the poverty level.
This is a continuing education pass/fail course based upon successful completion of:
- Course assignments, active participation, and at least 75% attendance
- Passing class assessments (vocabulary and terminology tests, typing 30+ WPM accurately, NC FAST cases exam)
- Attaining the WorkKeys Career Readiness Certificate: need to score at least a level 3 “Bronze” for Workplace Documents, Applied Math, Graphic Literacy. Central Piedmont CRC scheduling or you can also take the exam at other community college sites.
