Students will learn basic ICD-10-CM and CPT coding skills. Students will gain knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care, insurance terminology, billing and reimbursement skills.

  • Certain Infectious and Parasitic Diseases
  • Neoplasms
  • Diseases of the Blood and Blood-Forming Organs and Certain Disorders Involving the Immune Mechanism  
  • Endocrine, Nutritional, and Metabolic Diseases
  • Mental, Behavioral, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Diseases of the Nervous System, Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa, and Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid Process

Learner Outcomes

  1. Students will learn how to code medical procedures using the CPT.
  2. Students will learn how to code diagnoses using the ICD-10-CM.
  3. Students will gain knowledge of the HCPCS coding system.
  4. Students will be proficient in completing a CMS1500 claim form.
  5. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of reimbursement procedures.
  6. Students will be exposed to medicolegal terminology and issues.
  7. Students will continue their knowledge of and gain additional medical terminology.
  8. Students will gain understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Managed Care and commercial insurance plans.

Prerequisites

An approved application must be on file prior to enrollment. Students must:

  1. Successfully complete or test out of CIS-HEA7625 Medical Keyboarding
  2. Successfully complete OSC-HEA7254 Exploring Medical Language or show proof of successfully completing this course at another institution
