This course prepares the participant in the knowledge and skills to become a certified phlebotomist, a medical professional who collects blood from patients for various laboratory tests and procedures. The course consists of both a seven week classroom phase and, with successful completion, a seven week clinical experience. Students who complete both phases successfully are eligible to seek national certification. Phlebotomy training and certification enables individuals to seek employment in hospital labs, physician practices, and private independent laboratories with full time or part time employment.

Learner Outcomes

1. Explain the importance of the phlebotomist in health care.
2. Explain the relationship of phlebotomists to all personnel working in a medical laboratory, office or hospital.
3. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system and the effects of venipuncture procedures on this system.
4. Demonstrate proper phlebotomy procedure and the phlebotomist responsibilities related to patient care and health care system requirements.
5. Define medical and health care terminology related to phlebotomy, medical laboratory assisting and testing.
6. Discuss all routine tests of a clinical laboratory to include: chemistry, hematology and coagulation, blood bank tests, serology and microbiology, cytology and histology.
7. Know the legal and ethical issues associated with venipunctures.
8. Perform heel sticks and finger sticks on pediatric and neonatal patients.
9. Perform special collection techniques and procedures to include arterial punctures.
